LOCAL SHELTER POLICIES
We must also be aware of our local shelter policies that affect
the cats. Because of the large number of cats and kittens on the
Outer Banks and the shortage of homes, cats and kittens taken to
the local shelters are in jeopardy. Feline Hope always tells any
adopter that we take our cats/kittens right back if it does not
work out and we must do this right away.
County owned shelters do not take in for adoption kittens less
than eight weeks old. The theory is that their immune systems
have not been built up and they can bring in diseases. They do
encourage the owners to keep the kittens until they are of age
or to call Feline Hope. If the kittens are still surrendered to
the county shelter they will most likely be euthanized.
Feral cats and kittens are not considered adoptable and they
will also be euthanized if taken to the local county shelters.
They do not have the resources to try to socialize them.
